The week ahead, Aug. 28

Jul 14, 2023Jul 14, 2023

Burner traffic has (mostly) dissipated now that Burning Man is underway, but rib traffic begins this week as the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook Off opens to the public on Wednesday. Weather should remain sunny and warm as the region heads into Labor Day weekend. Here's a look at road conditions, events and weather in the region as the calendar turns to September.

Nugget Rib Cook Off street closures, Sparks: Roads around Victorian Plaza Circle will be closed through Thursday, Sept. 7 for the annual rib cook-off, both for the event itself and for setup and breakdown of the event. Road closures include stretches of Victorian Avenue, Victorian Plaza Circle, Avenue of the Oaks and 10th Street; see the map for details.

I-580, Reno: Both northbound and southbound Interstate 580 will be reduced to one lane overnight between Moana Lane and Mill Street through Friday morning as the Nevada Department of Transportation continues work on the stretch of freeway. Off-ramps from northbound I-580 to westbound and eastbound Interstate 80 also will be closed overnight; marked detours will be available.

State Route 431 (Mt. Rose Highway): Drivers on Mt. Rose Highway should anticipate intermittent delays and stoppages as NDOT replaces the avalanche control system ahead of this winter. Delays of less than 30 minutes are expected as a helicopter delivers components for the project, which is expected to last through October.

West Fourth Street and Woodland Avenue, Reno: RTC Washoe begins round-the-clock work Monday through Friday on the new roundabout at West Fourth and Woodland Avenue near the intersection of West Fourth and Mesa Park Road on Monday, Aug. 28. The extended hours should allow the project to be completed by late September.

E. Greg Street, Sparks: Overnight maintenance will take place on Greg Street this week to restore a smooth concrete service to the 0.8-mile stretch of road between Sparks Boulevard and I-80. The project is expected to last through Saturday.

Lockwood exit on westbound I-80 east of Sparks: Overnight lane and ramp closures continue as the Nevada Department of Transportation works to lengthen the ramp for enhanced safety and flow. Westbound lanes on I-80 will be reduced to one lane intermittently between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekdays, and the ramp will be closed intermittently between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekdays. Work will continue through mid-October.

I-580, Washoe Valley: Expect intermittent lane and ramp closures on I-580 through Washoe Valley as NDOT improves lighting between Eastlake Boulevard and the Bowers Mansion/Old 395 exit. The project is expected to continue through late October.

Oddie and Montello, Sparks: Access to both sides of Montello Street via Oddie Boulevard will be closed on Monday to complete work on traffic signals (see detour below). It's part of the ongoing Oddie Wells Project that will last through September.

Silver Lake Road, North Valleys: Traffic on Silver Lake Road will be disrupted as for a few more weeks RTC's Sky Vista Parkway Project continues. Local traffic will be permitted eastbound on a limited basis; all other traffic may detour on Stead and Lear boulevards and Sky Vista Parkway. Project enhancements include wider traffic lanes, wider bike lanes, wider sidewalks and new street lighting.

U.S. Highway 95 south of Fallon: NDOT will continue work to resurface 10 miles of U.S. Highway 95 south of Sheckler Road, with delays up to 30 minutes possible on Wednesday, Aug. 30 and Thursday, Aug. 31. Pilot cars will lead vehicles through the stretch as traffic will be reduced to one direction at a time.
